Preliminary individual reader profile

    Preliminary readership profile

Identifying a readership profile is a vital part of starting a magazine. It decides who the articles will be targeted at. Once the readership profile has been identified the design, materials, adverts and other things that are in the magazine can be aimed at this particular group of people in order to appeal to them, meaning they will be more likely to buy the magazine.
If the readership profile would not be identified than it would be very difficult for the editors and other people responsible for the magazine to decide on things like what colour scheme to use, what adverts to put into the magazine and most important, what things to write about.

When thinking about the target audience it is important to take into consideration not only the age of students in the 6th form itself, but also younger students that are thinking of going into the 6th form. This means that my magazine will not be just targeted at 16-18 year olds but also younger pupils (15 years old). For the younger readers I would include a small section including things like:

    • what to take in account when looking for a 6th form and what things to avoid,
    • tips from teachers on how to acclimatise in the new environment
    • variety of information, not everything about education but also some fun stuff

I don’t want to expand my target age group to even younger teenagers as I would prefer to keep it small. This would help me to target the material in the magazine to a certain group of people instead of choosing a subject that will be suitable for the 14/15 year olds and 18 year olds at the same time- this could be quite tricky.

Other important things that I have to take account of are interests of my target audience, some people like sports, other people like to spend their free time reading books, listening to music etc. however at least one thing they will all have in common which is education. It is going to be a 6th form magazine which means that there has to be a range of information about education, and the life in 6th form. Another important thing is gender of the potential readers. I can not create a magazine that is only one sex orientated like Top Gear (which is typically for men) or Women’s Health (typical magazine for woman). The 6th form magazine should be a unisex magazine as the 6th form, at least The Downs 6th form consists of both, girls as well as boys.
